My First Aloha

Friday, April 24, 2009

This is my first time participating in Aloha Friday at An Island Life. My understanding is it is a place where I can ask a question and see if I can get some input, and maybe meet some new friends too. I thought I'd give it a try to see if anyone has an idea for me. Couldn't hurt, right?

We moved into our new house in mid December, after staying with my inlaws for about six months. Prior to moving out of our old house, my now four year old shared a room with my husband and me, and was in a crib. Now she's in her own room, in a big girl bed, in a new house, and she's having a lot of anxiety. A couple of days ago she told me that she misses the old house because she misses her room with her crib with Momma and Daddy. I know she misses sleeping in our room because that's all she's ever known. We've tried all kinds of things to make her feel more comfortable in her own room...nightlights, dream catchers, special stuffed animals to watch over her, the fan and the radio on for white noise...you name it, but she would still prefer to sleep in our room. Someone suggested to me that I try finding a book about moving to read to her.

So after all of that wordiness, my question is, does anyone know any good children's books about moving, or getting your own room?

Your librarian may be able to help. I would also ask a bookstore or try doing a search on Amazon.

Welcome to Aloha Friday! I love to buy books for my daughter, but nothing is coming to mind. The teacher of the parenting class I take just loves books by Mr. Rogers (fred rogers). Maybe you should see if he has any on the subject. Good luck!! Oh - Berenstain Bears are a good choice too!

I'm sorry I don't know of any books on the subject. One thing that we did when we moved was to get some wall stickers. They are in the section with wallpaper border at Target and Wal-Mart. They are removable. Anyway, we let our girls pick the ones they wanted and help decorate the walls with them. It sounds like you have tried to make her feel comfortable in the room already, but perhaps something like this might help her feel more at home in her room?

I remember having a Sesame Street book at one time. It was a long time ago though.

I was going to suggest the same thing, talk to your local librarian. You can also do topic searches on Amazon or Google for books on the subject. We did the same thing for my son on death/dying when my grandfather passed away. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I figured I'd probably need to talk to a librarian, but was curious if anyone knew of any good books off the bat.

Erin, she has some of the wall stickers on her walls, and she put them up there. She has all her familiar things around her that she likes. She has a framed picture of my husband and me on her nightstand. Yet obviously something is still missing.

I really don't know any. Have you tried googling "Children's Moving Books" I am sure it will help you.

I have 3 girls who all slept with us for a long time. When we thought they were ready, we started them in their new beds. The condition was that as long as they fell asleep there, whenever they woke up they could come in. We never made it wrong to sleep with us since it was right for so long. When ever they made it longer then they had previously we celebrated. Cali is 4 now and will come in somewhere in the night, often. And the big girls still come in and snuggle with me from time to time. It may be unconventional but it works for us. I think its hard when you let them do it for so long then change things. Maybe you could put a chaise or something of the like in your room that she can come to is she needs to. Just a thought. I hope it works out for you because its frustrating until you find a solution that works for everyone.
