Valentine's Day Book Suggestions
Monday, February 9, 2009
I've seen a few blog posts over the last week or so mentioning the lack of decent Valentine's books. Well, since I love children's books (and I'm even a bit of a children's book snob) and because I do enjoy reading aloud, I thought I'd mention a couple I enjoy.
The first is The Valentine Bears by Eve Bunting. This is a cute book about how Mrs. Bear prepares for Valentine's Day, and sets her alarm to wake her up from hibernation so she can celebrate with Mr. Bear.
The next book is Love Ruby Valentine by Laurie Friedman Ruby's favorite holiday is Valentine's Day. She spends the days leading up to the big day preparing gifts and Valentines for everyone in town to show them how much she loves them. This makes her so tired that she lies down for just a little bit - and sleeps right through the big day! Will anyone want her Valentines on February 15th?
Then there's Valentine Express by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. In this book, a brother and sister bunny team up to make Valentine's for all of their neighbors. I enjoy books by Wallace as her pictures are all paper art - beautiful.
Finally, there's The Night Before Valentine's Day by Natasha Wing. Wing has a "Night Before" book for just about every holiday - similar in idea to the classic Night Before Christmas. I have a couple of these, and, like to read them the night/day before, or as close as I can to the holiday if I'm reading it to my class.
I hope that gives you a few new ideas for a Valentine's themed Read-Aloud. I'll be sure to post if I think of any others. I actually don't have that many Valentine's books in my collection. I seem to have more for the fall holidays and Christmas. If you have a favorite, I'd love to hear about it!

Thanks for listing my Valentine's Day book. I love how the illustrator included lots of heart-shaped animals in the scenes. P.S. The Night Before St. Patrick's Day is on its way!
