I love this idea for a book of the month club gift.

I like doing crafts and activities with Paige, but sometimes she wants to do a "project" and I just have no ideas. So I'm really liking this new series called Slacker Saturdays - quick and easy ideas for slacker parents!

I think the idea of a word of the week sounds like fun!

I LOVE Dr. Seuss, and I LOVE these cupcakes!

Slow

Sunday, March 15, 2009

I know things have been a bit slow around here lately. Heck, things have more or less ground to a halt.

Well, I'm still alive - just finished a hellish week. Some sort of stomach bug came into my classroom last week, and took out almost all of the staff and students, and then we all brought it home to our families. So it has been a wonderful week full of unhappy stomachs around here, which cut into my desire to post, and wiped out plans for fun things like Unplugged Projects.

We've also had some sleeping issues with Paige - among the nightmares and night terrors she was already experiencing, she now seems terrified to go to bed, and we've had several nights with screaming and general unhappiness that ends up with a completely tired household. I called her pediatrician on Friday and they referred me to the Children's Hospital's sleep clinic. She now has an appointment in May. I'm kind of hoping things will just settle down and I can cancel the appointment. Although, realistically, we'll probably be a family of insomniacs by May.

Hopefully things will start to pick up around here as our tummies go back to normal.

Paigeisms

Tuesday, March 3, 2009

After a lot of, "I want, I want..." at the beginning of dinner tonight, Roland asked Paige, "what's the magic word?"

Paige's answer?

"Bippity boppity boo."

He decided that was close enough, after we stopped laughing.

Unplugged Project

Monday, March 2, 2009

After a few months of packing, moving, unpacking, figuring out a new camera, getting the computer set up, holidays, etc, etc, I'm hoping to get back into the swing of the weekly Unplugged Project.

This week's theme was "bottle" and Paige and I did a simple painting project that I found at Just For Fun - painting flowers with a soda bottle.

Basically, you dip the bottom of the bottle in the paint, and then use it to stamp onto the paper, to make the flower petals.

Then you dip the cover into a different color, and use that for the center of the flower.

Here Paige told me she was adding stems! I thought it was so cute that she did that on her own.

Her first finished piece, which for some reason Blogger wants oriented this way. Oh well.

The only difficulty I had with this activity was that sometimes I'd end up with too much paint on the bottom of the bottle. If there's a lot of paint on the bottom in the middle, I'd end up with an odd looking print. Too much paint on the cover also made for some goopy flower middles, as you can see. Overall though, this was fun and easy, and Paige seemed to enjoy it much more than I'd thought. She enjoys painting, but often quickly abandons "techniques" for finger/body painting.
